HAVS, which can also be referred to as white finger, may arrise after a few months or years from the regular use of hand-held or other vibrating power tools. It can be a painful and disabling disorders of the blood vessels, nerves and joints.
Early symptoms of HAVS may include tingling or numbness in the fingers, inability to properly feel objects, blanching finger tips especially in cold and damp weather and loss of strength in the hand. Contact with a vibrating tool is also linked to conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
Where a works process is likely to pose a high risk of injury or illness, it is the resposibility of the employers to evaluate whether there is a potential risk. However, a full HAVS And Vibration White Finger assessment must be carried out by a qualified health professional (Tier 3). This may also include a formal diagnosis by a trained and qualified occupational health doctor (Tier 4). Our occupational health team is able to undertake both Tier 3 and 4 assessments.
