If you suspect you're pregnant and need to know as quickly as possible, a standard store-bought pregnancy test may not give you confidence in the result. Blood hCG tests can detect pregnancy earlier than home urine tests and can also measure the exact level of hCG, which can help monitor the progression of the pregnancy or detect potential concerns.
* Important: Certain medications, especially those containing hCG (often used in fertility treatments), can affect the test results. Be sure to inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking.
A commercial pregnancy test looks for a pregnancy hormone in the urine. But the chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone doesn't always find its way into the urine during the early stages of pregnancy. A pregnancy blood test looks for exactly the same hormone, which is present in the blood immediately after conception.
The hCG hormone is produced when a fertilised egg settles in the uterus. hCG levels build up gradually in the body as the days progress. However, it can be several days before the hormone is detectable in urine.
In the right circumstances, a blood test can detect pregnancy only six days after ovulation. Your clinician will talk you through the procedure and the potential results. The blood test will either involve looking for the mere presence of hCG or how much there is in the blood. Either way, the results are just as accurate as the standard urine test.
Most women use a commercial urine test to see if they're pregnant, as they're easy to use and very accurate. But if you're in the earliest stages of pregnancy, this test might not be able to detect any hCG in the urine.
You should book a pregnancy blood test if you ovulated within the last 10 days and are displaying the following symptoms:
