What is Mole Imaging?

Mole imaging is a specialist service offering efficient, consultant-led assessment of moles and skin lesions, without the need for multiple or costly consultations. Using advanced dermatoscopic photography, trained nurses capture high-quality images of your mole or lesion, which are then securely reviewed and reported on by a consultant dermatologist. This streamlined process enables the early identification of potential skin cancers or provides reassurance where changes are harmless, giving you clear answers and peace of mind.

You may benefit from mole imaging if you have:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a mole and when is it normal to have them?

Most moles are harmless clusters of pigment-producing cells. It’s normal to develop new moles during childhood and teenage years; they may fade or disappear with age.

When should I worry about a mole?

You should get a mole checked if it changes in size, shape or colour, becomes painful, itchy, inflamed, bleeds, crusts, or if a new or unusual mark doesn’t heal after a few weeks.

What is the ABCDE rule for checking moles?

A = Asymmetry, B = Border irregularity, C = Colour variation, D = Diameter (over 6 mm), E = Evolution (changes over time).

How often should I check my moles?

Check your skin once a month so you’re familiar with what’s normal and can notice changes early.

Does having lots of moles increase my risk of skin cancer?

Yes. Having more than 50 moles, or large and irregular ones, increases the risk of melanoma.

Can a new mole in adulthood be a cause for concern?

Yes. A new mole after the age of 40, or one that changes noticeably, should be checked promptly.

What is the difference between melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer?

Melanoma is rarer but more likely to spread. Non-melanoma skin cancers, such as basal or squamous cell carcinoma, are more common and usually less aggressive.

If a mole is removed, does that mean it was cancerous?

Not necessarily. Many moles are removed for reassurance or cosmetic reasons. The tissue is analysed to confirm the diagnosis.

How can I reduce my risk of skin cancer?

Protect your skin from UV radiation — seek shade between 11 am and 3 pm, use SPF 30+ sunscreen, wear protective clothing and avoid sunbeds.

If I’m worried about a mole, should I wait or act immediately?

If you notice a new or changing mole, don’t wait. Early detection leads to better outcomes — book an assessment as soon as possible.
