HPV is the virus responsible for 99.7% of cervical cancer cases around the world. Attending regular HPV & cervical smear tests can identify the presence of the human papillomavirus before cancer has a chance to fully develop. Cervical screening can also identify abnormalities at an early stage - giving medical interventions the best possible chance of success.

Why Should You Get Regular HPV & Cervical Smear Tests?

Cervical screening in Cardiff (formerly known as a smear test) is the best preventative method we have to fight cervical cancer. While a smear doesn't test for the presence of cancer, it does identify the presence of the HPV virus - known to cause nearly all cervical cancer cases.

In the UK alone, cervical cancer claims between 800 and 1,000 lives per year. And there are around 3,200 diagnoses every year. The good news is that, according to Cancer Research UK, 99.8% of cases are preventable through early detection of the HPV virus.

Once cervical cancer takes hold, it's very difficult to cure. Just 51% of people survive for more than 10 years after a diagnosis. That's why attending regular HPV & cervical smear tests is vital. If the virus is detected early, clinicians can administer treatments to prevent cancer in the future.

What Is the HPV Virus?

HPV is an acronym for human papillomavirus - an extremely common collection of viruses that doesn't always present symptoms. 8 out of 10 men and women who have had any type of sexual contact will get HPV at some point in their life. That's why no one should ever be embarrassed about it.

Most people are infected with HPV through sexual intercourse. However, it can also be spread via skin-on-skin contact around the genital areas and through the use of sex toys.

In 9 out of 10 people the body's immune system will eradicate the virus within 2 years. Most people recover from HPV quickly and naturally, without even knowing they've had it. But high-risk HPV types can remain in the body for a long time - increasing the risk of cervical cancer.

What Happens During an HPV & Cervical Smear Test?

While a HPV & cervical smear test isn't a pleasant experience, it shouldn't be feared. It lasts only five minutes, and it's completely painless. The process involves the use of a speculum, which is used to gently hold open the vagina. A clinician then uses a small brush to take a sample of cells from the cervix.

Once a viable sample has been taken, it's sent straight to a testing laboratory for analysis. During these tests, lab technicians search for the presence of high-risk HPV viruses, if positive the test will be extended to check for abnormal cells. It is important to note that a positive HPV result does not mean you have cervical cancer.

When you book HPV testing & cervical smear screening in Cardiff with iGP, you should get your results in no more than three days. You can access your results via the iGP online patient portal, but a clinician might contact you if further discussions or investigations are necessary.

What Happens Next?

If your cervical screening delivers a negative result, you're at low risk of developing cervical cancer. However, you should still attend regular smear tests in accordance with your clinician's recommendations.

If your smear test delivers a positive HPV result, your sample will automatically be sent for a PAP test to find out whether any abnormal cells require treatment. Your clinician will speak to you about the process and the treatment options.

Inconclusive results may require repeat testing - usually within three months. If you have tested positive for HPV but don't have abnormal cells in your cervix, you'll probably be invited to another smear test within 6 - 12 months.

A positive HPV result along with abnormal cells will result in a referral to a gynaecologist. The doctor will need to perform a thorough examination of your cervix - a procedure called a colposcopy. Your treatment options will be discussed shortly after this procedure.
