The thyroid is a small gland that lies in front of the trachea (windpipe). This butterfly-shaped gland is responsible for producing the hormones that regulate bodily functions such as your temperature and your heartbeat.
When your thyroid becomes overactive (hyperthyroidism), you can suffer from a range of unpleasant - and sometimes life-threatening - conditions. When your thyroid becomes underactive (hypothyroidism), the related symptoms can be equally as debilitating.
When your thyroid produces too many or too few hormones, you'll start to feel unwell in a number of ways. Your doctor will probably associate your symptoms with a thyroid problem and advise you to take a blood test.
If you're given treatment for an underactive thyroid following a blood test, you'll probably be required to take hormone replacement medication daily. You'll also be required to undergo regular blood tests until your doctor is satisfied the medicine you're taking is beginning to normalise your hormone levels.
If you're being treated for an overactive thyroid, you may be prescribed a drug that slows the production of hormones in the thyroid gland. If the problem persists, you might be recommended for radioiodine treatment, which destroys thyroid cells - thus slowing down the production of hormones.
