For decades, Meningitis B has been the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK and Ireland. Vaccines are the only way to prevent meningitis and have almost eliminated some other kinds of meningitis.
* The vaccine is not licensed for children under 8 weeks old because there is not enough information about how well the vaccine works in this age group. Please note that vaccine cost is the cost per dose to have the vaccine with a nurse and not a GP. There is an additional fee of £25 for the vaccine to be administered by a GP.
£145 Per Dose
Meningitis B is a bacterial infection caused by *Neisseria meningitidis* group B, which can lead to severe inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It is a life-threatening condition that can result in septicemia, brain damage, or even death if untreated. Meningitis B primarily affects infants, young children, and teenagers, but anyone can be at risk. Vaccination offers vital protection against this dangerous disease.
The Meningitis B vaccine, commonly known as Bexsero, is highly effective at preventing infections caused by *Neisseria meningitidis* group B. It is administered as a series of injections and is particularly recommended for infants, children, and teenagers. For adults at increased risk, such as those with certain medical conditions or those exposed during outbreaks, vaccination is also advised. The vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies, offering significant protection against this serious disease.
The vaccine is recommended for infants, children, teenagers, and adults at increased risk of infection, such as those with weakened immune systems or individuals exposed during a meningitis outbreak.
The vaccine provides significant protection against Meningitis B when the full vaccination schedule is completed. While no vaccine offers 100% protection, it greatly reduces the risk of severe illness.
Common side effects include soreness at the injection site, fever, or irritability in young children. These symptoms are generally mild and resolve within a few days. Serious side effects are very rare.
The number of doses depends on the age of the person being vaccinated. Infants typically receive two or three doses, while older children, teenagers, and adults may require two doses. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate schedule for you.
The vaccine is routinely offered to infants in the UK as part of the NHS immunization schedule. However, for other age groups or travel purposes, it may need to be accessed privately. Consult your healthcare provider for details.
