Suture (Stitches) & Staple Removal Procedure

It is important that the procedure to remove sutures (stitches) or staples is carried out at the correct time. If you have the sutures or staples taken out too soon, the wound might not be healed properly. If you leave them in too long, they can be more difficult to remove and increase the risk of scarring.

Prior to your procedure the sutured wound and surrounding area will be cleaned thoroughly to avoid any risk of infection.

Suture (stitches) Removal - The nurse will carefully remove each of the sutures using forceps and clinical scissors (or scalpel). The sutures will be snipped and carefully pulled from your wound, one by one until all are removed.

During the removal, the nurse will check for infection and provide guidance and treatment if required. After the removal, the nurse will ensure the wound is properly dressed to provide the best possible recovery and minimise scarring.
