Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver that can cause flu-like symptoms and liver failure, and can be fatal. It is spread through contact with infected blood or body fluids - for example, through sexual intercourse or sharing needles.

* Please note that vaccine cost is the cost per dose to have the vaccine with a nurse and not a GP. There is an additional fee of £25 for the vaccine to be administered by a GP. The number of doses required indicates the number of doses for a standard course. An accelerated course can impact the number of doses required. It is strongly advised that you leave plenty of time to complete the course before your trip. Some vaccination courses, with more than one vaccine required, may take up to a month or longer and many vaccinations will not become fully effective until weeks after the course completion. .

Appointment Information: Several different course schedules are available for Hepatitis B. For full protection, you will need at least three injections of Hepatitis B vaccine over a period of four to six months. An accelerated course can be given over 28 days. However, a booster dose is then recommended Standard Course - 0, at least 1 month later and then 5 months later after that. Rapid Course - 0, 1 month, 2months, 12 months later Very Rapid Course - 0, 7 days, 21 days and 12 months later. Children under 16 should be advised by the doctor for effective course schedules. The Hepatitis B vaccine can be given from birth. Doses: 3

The Hepatitis B Vaccine

An accelerated schedule of four doses can also be used for those requiring rapid protection. The vaccine is recommended for individuals at risk, including healthcare workers, travelers to high-risk regions, people with chronic conditions requiring regular blood transfusions, and anyone exposed to infected bodily fluids. The vaccine provides long-lasting immunity for most individuals.

Who should get the Hepatitis B vaccine?

The vaccine is recommended for all infants, unvaccinated children, and adults at risk of infection. This includes healthcare workers, travelers to high-risk areas, individuals with multiple sexual partners, and those exposed to infected blood or bodily fluids.

How effective is the Hepatitis B vaccine?

The vaccine is over 95% effective in preventing Hepatitis B infection when the full series is completed. Immunity typically develops after the second dose.

What are the side effects of the vaccine?

Most people experience mild side effects, such as soreness at the injection site, headache, or fatigue. Severe allergic reactions are extremely rare.

How long does the Hepatitis B vaccine provide protection?

The vaccine provides long-term protection, with immunity lasting at least 20 years in most individuals. Booster doses are usually not necessary for healthy adults.

Can the vaccine be given after exposure to Hepatitis B?

Yes, post-exposure prophylaxis with the vaccine and Hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) can help prevent infection if given within 24 hours of exposure.

If you cancel your appointment 24 hours before it starts, then you will receive a full refund. However, If you cancel your appointment within the 24 hour period before the appointment is due, then you will be liable to pay the cost of the consultation.
