Vaccination against rabies is usually carried out as a precautionary measure, in case you are bitten by an animal that might have rabies and medical attention is not available.
* Please note that vaccine cost is the cost per dose to have the vaccine with a nurse and not a GP. There is an additional fee of £25 for the vaccine to be administered by a GP. The number of doses required indicates the number of doses for a standard course. An accelerated course can impact the number of doses required. It is strongly advised that you leave plenty of time to complete the course before your trip. Some vaccination courses, with more than one vaccine required, may take up to a month or longer and many vaccinations will not become fully effective until weeks after the course completion. The brand of vaccine we supply may also vary depending on the current supply status of a particular vaccine.

Time: 30 minutesRabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. It is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, often via bites or scratches. Common carriers include dogs, bats, and wild mammals. Rabies is preventable through vaccination, which is particularly important for travelers to high-risk areas or individuals working with animals.
The rabies vaccine is an effective way to protect against this deadly disease. It is administered in three doses over a 28-day period for pre-exposure protection. Travelers to areas where rabies is endemic, such as parts of Asia, Africa, and South America, are strongly advised to get vaccinated. For those exposed to rabies, immediate post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) involving the vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin is critical. The vaccine stimulates the immune system to recognize and fight the virus, providing essential protection for those at risk.
The vaccine is recommended for travelers to high-risk areas, veterinary workers, animal handlers, and individuals who may come into contact with wild animals. It is also essential for those exposed to a potentially rabid animal.
The rabies vaccine is highly effective when administered before exposure or as part of post-exposure treatment. Completing the full vaccination schedule is essential for protection.
Mild side effects include redness, swelling at the injection site, or a slight fever. Severe reactions are extremely rare.
For pre-exposure vaccination, immunity lasts approximately two years. Booster doses may be recommended for ongoing exposure risk. Post-exposure vaccination provides lifelong immunity if the full schedule is completed.
Wash the wound immediately with soap and water, seek medical attention, and inform your healthcare provider. If there is any risk of rabies, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) must be started immediately.
