This is a critical warning
At IGP, we offer specialist focused ultrasound scans designed to answer specific clinical questions quickly, safely, and compassionately. Our scans are carried out by our Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and provide targeted insight without the need for a full pelvic ultrasound—ideal for follow-up care, reassurance, or monitoring of known conditions.
Important: A focused scan is only appropriate if you have previously been assessed or had a baseline scan for conditions requiring detailed mapping or diagnosis.
A focused ultrasound is a short, targeted scan that provides quick answers to a specific clinical question. It builds on a previous diagnosis or assessment and is ideal for follow-up care. These scans are not suitable for first-time evaluations, new unexplored symptoms, or complex gynaecological concerns. In those cases, we recommend a full scan and clinical consultation.
These 20-minute ultrasound appointments are available to book online and are intended to support your ongoing care at IGP. They are not a substitute for a full initial pelvic scan or complex symptom assessment. If required, our team will guide you to the appropriate comprehensive consultation.
Mr. Alan Treharne is a Consultant Gynaecologist with a special interest in menopause care and gynaecological ultrasound. He is a BMS-registered menopause specialist, and a strong advocate for accessible, patient-led women’s health services across Mid and West Wales. Alongside managing a wide range of gynaecological conditions, he plays a key role in national efforts to improve diagnostic imaging and care standards.
If you've recently had a coil (intrauterine device) inserted and are unsure if it’s correctly positioned, or if you're experiencing ongoing cramping, pain, or can't feel the threads, a focused scan can help. This 20-minute ultrasound checks that the coil is correctly placed within the uterus, ensuring it functions effectively and comfortably. If adjustments or further care are needed, we’ll provide you with clear guidance.
After a miscarriage, it’s normal to wonder whether the pregnancy has fully passed. If you're experiencing continued bleeding, pain, or discomfort, this scan provides reassurance. Designed for patients already seen at IGP, this focused scan checks for retained pregnancy tissue and helps confirm if a complete miscarriage has occurred. Having clarity at this stage supports both your recovery and emotional wellbeing.
If you’ve previously been diagnosed with benign ovarian cysts, fibroids, or other gynaecological findings, regular monitoring may be recommended. This focused scan is ideal for checking whether these structures have changed in size or appearance and ensures safe, ongoing management. This service is only appropriate if you’ve had a baseline scan or prior consultation at IGP.
If you are up to 14 weeks pregnant and want reassurance—perhaps after spotting, mild pain, or anxiety—this focused scan is ideal. We assess for fetal heartbeat and early growth to confirm ongoing viability. This scan is especially appropriate if you have already had an initial pregnancy assessment at IGP.
If this is your first scan in pregnancy, or you have complex symptoms, please book a full 30-minute Ultrasound scan instead - see our Gynaecology services page.
