Dr Vivek Goel is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Royal Gwent Hospital with over 12 years of experience. He began his Gastroenterology training in East Yorkshire in 2000 before moving to South Wales to continue his training in Newport and Cardiff. Since 2005, Dr Goel has been a Consultant at the Royal Gwent Hospital, specialising in advanced endoscopic procedures and bowel cancer screening.
Dr Goel’s expertise includes mucosal imaging techniques, such as Trimodal Imaging for Barrett’s Oesophagus and Chromoendoscopy for colitis surveillance. He is highly skilled in performing gastroscopies, colonoscopies, and complex polyp removals using endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). As the Clinical Lead for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Dr Goel oversees a multidisciplinary team managing complex IBD cases.
His clinical interests cover conditions such as Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Coeliac Disease, Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease, and gastrointestinal cancers. He also specialises in advanced endoscopic techniques to improve early cancer detection.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr Goel is involved in medical education. He serves as the Training Programme Director for Gastroenterology in Wales and represents the region on the UK Specialist Advisory Committee. He is an MRCP PACES examiner and contributes to the development of the Gastroenterology exit exam.
